“LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS” “어둠 속의 빛"
If you are listening to this sermon, my hope will be that your own pastor is taking some much-needed time off. This is the purpose of this sermon and worship aids: to provide your own pastor the chance to catch her/his breath and enjoy family during the holidays.
여러분이 오늘 영상설교로 저를 대하고 계신다면, 이번 한 주라도 여러분의 담임목사님이 그동안 밀렸던 휴식을 잘 취하고 계시길 바래봅니다. 우리 연회에서는 이번 대강절 기간에 개체 교회의 목사님들이 연휴 동안 가족들과 시간을 보내며 잠시 숨을 고를 수 있기를 바라는 마음으로 온라인 예배를 준비했습니다.
We’ve learned a lot about online worship during the global pandemics, and one important lesson is you can’t go too long with an online sermon. Unlike in-person preaching, where the congregation is pretty captive, folks can turn you off literally if they are not interested. Even if they doze off, which can be pretty common during in-person preaching, one can simply turn off the video/audio online and enjoy a good nap! So, I have come to the conclusion that a good online sermon should last around 8-10 minutes maximum. Go any longer, and it’s “bye-bye” video and preacher! I’m sure you won’t complain if we stick to this time limit.
이번 팬데믹 동안 온라인 예배에 대해 많이 배우게 되었는데요, 그 중 하나가 온라인 설교는 너무 길면 안된다는 점입니다. 성전에서 회중이 앉아 드리는 대면예배의 설교와는 달리, 온라인 예배는 중간에 꺼 버릴 수도 있습니다. 대면 예배시간에도 잠시 졸 수도 있지만, 온라인 예배는 아예 화면과 소리를 끄고 낮잠을 잘 수도 있지요! 그래서 훌륭한 온라인 설교는 8-10분 정도가 적당하다는 결론을 내렸습니다. 그보다 길어지면 온라인 예배와 목사님에게 “안녕히 계세요~" 인사를 하고 떠나 버릴 수가 있지요. 제가 오늘 예배에서 이 온라인 설교의 시간 매너를 잘 지킨다면 이에 대해 불평할 분은 아무도 없으실 듯 합니다.
We have allowed for an open time frame for this video: Some of you may see this before Christmas and some of you after during the early part of the new year. Either way, our theme of “light in the darkness” will work. For you see, the global pandemics of COVID-19, world- wide racism and climate destruction has cast a dark cloud over all of our lives. We have been living in dark times, and often we lose our way because it is so dark and ominous.
연회에서는 이 예배를 각 교회의 필요에 따라 연말 연시 중 어느 주일에나 활용하실 수 있도록 준비했습니다. 어떤 분들은 이 예배를 성탄절 전 주일에 접하실 수도 있고, 어떤 교회에서는 신년예배에서 대하게 될 수도 있습니다. 언제 이 예배에 참석하시든지 간에 “어둠 속의 빛"이라는 주제가 여러분의 상황에 잘 맞으리라 기대합니다. 코로나 19 로 인한 세계적인 팬데믹과 인종차별과 기후 파괴는 우리 삶에 검은 먹구름이 되었습니다. 우리는 이 어두운 시대를 살아가며, 캄캄하고 불길한 가운데 갈 길을 잃기도 하지요.
My youngest son, Trent is an adult now with children of his own, but I can still remember he would wake up in the middle of the night and declare: “I’m afraid of the dark, Dad!” I would usually reply like a typical adult: “There’s nothing to be afraid of, Trent – the doors are all locked and your sisters and parents are all in nearby rooms.” “But I’m still afraid of the dark, Dad.”
이제는 아이들의 아빠가 된 제 막내 아들 트랜트는 어렸을 적 한 밤중에 잠에서 깨어 “아빠, 캄캄한 밤이 너무 무서워요"라고 했지요. 어둠이 무섭다는 아이에게 저는 여느 부모처럼 대답을 하곤 했습니다. “아들아, 두려워 할게 하나도 없단다. 문은 다 잠겨있고, 누나들과 엄마 아빠가 가까이에 있잖아.” 이렇게 안심을 시키려는 제게 아들은 이렇게 대답하곤 했지요. “아빠, 그래도 어둠이 무서워요.”
Foolishly, I would stick to adult logic: “But there is nothing to be afraid of: There is nothing there in the dark.” How easy it is for us to forget children’s logic: Of course, there are things in the darkness: Scary, evil, frightening things that hide in the darkness and wait to pounce on us. “I’m afraid of the dark:” how many of us have that same feeling? Maybe not about the physical darkness, but the symbolism of what darkness represents: disease, destruction, desolation and death. From the dark oil spill off our coast, the vigilante killings by a 17-year-old with an assault rifle at night, to the dark night of our souls when drive-by shootings take the life of innocent children in their own homes. We have seen our share of all of these things in the past year and half, and we all are a little afraid of the darkness they represent.
어리석게도 저는 어른의 논리를 풀어 놓았습니다. “두려워 할 이유가 하나도 없단다. 캄캄해도 아무것도 무서워 할게 없어.” 이렇듯 어른들은 종종 아이들의 논리를 잊고 살아갑니다. 아이들에게는 어둠이 두렵습니다. 어둠에는 무섭고, 악하고, 겁나는 것들이 숨어서 우리를 덮치려고 기다리고 있지요.
“어둠이 무서워요”라고 말하는 아이들처럼 우리 모두 그런 두려움을 가지고 살아갑니다. 꼭 문자 그대로의 어둠이 아니더라도, 어두움이 상징하는 질병이나 파괴, 적막함과 죽음을 두려워 하지요. 해변에 유출된 검은 기름 때, 한 밤 중에 일어나는 17 세의 청소년의 무법적인 소총 발사, 달리는 차에서 행해진 무작위적인 총기 난사에 캄캄한 밤 집에서 자고 있던 무고한 어린아이들이 생명을 잃게 됩니다. 우리는 지난 일년 반 동안 이러한 일들이 일어나는 것을 목격하며 이러한 사건 사고들이 상징하는 어두움을 두려워 하게 되었습니다.
It would be pretty foolish of me to take on the theological prologue of the Gospel of John in a short sermon like today, but unlike the very human nativity scenes in the Synoptic Gospels, John begins with a theological statement. Many scholars comment on how he draws from the creation story in Genesis for many of the images here, going back into the beginning of time to the creation of all that is. What is the first thing God creates: The light! John mirrors this imagery, and ties Jesus to the life of the world created in the beginning. I am struck by how John couples “life” with “light,” such that the life of Jesus “was the light of all people.” And then the famous line: “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”
오늘과 같은 짧은 온라인 설교에서 요한복음의 서문에 대한 신학적인 해석을 다는 것은 무리이겠지만, 간단히 요약을 해 드리자면, 공관복음에 나오는 예수님의 탄생 장면과는 달리 요한복음의 저자는 신학적인 선포로 시작합니다. 학자들은 요한복음의 저자가 창세기에 기록된 태초에 대한 이미지를 많이 차용하고 있다고 말합니다. 오늘 본문에 나오는 많은 이미지들이 태초까지 거슬러 올라가, 천지창조의 모습을 상기시키지요. 하나님께서 제일 먼저 창조하신 것이 무엇입니까? 빛이지요. 요한은 이 장면을 상기시키며 예수님을 태초에 있었던 모든 생명의 창조와 연결을 시킵니다. 제게는 요한이 “생명"과 “빛"을 연결시킨 것이 참 인상적입니다. 예수의 생명 자체가 “모든 사람들의 빛”이라 합니다. 우리에게 잘 알려진 “그 빛이 어둠 속에서 비치니, 어둠이 그 빛을 이기지 못하였다"는 구절이 바로 이런 연결에서 비롯됩니다.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” Going back to my young son Trent when he was afraid of the dark and what would help him: “How about if we keep a night light on in your room, Trent?” He would reply: “Okay Dad, but can you stay here a little while?” “Sure, Trent:” that’s a pretty potent combination: light and your Dad to fight off the forces of darkness. Sure enough: when the light came on, his fear would subside and he would fall asleep rather quickly.
“그 빛이 어둠 속에서 비치니, 어둠이 그 빛을 이기지 못하였다." 제 막내 트랜트가 어둠을 두려워 하고 있을 때에 도움이 되었던 것들을 떠올려 봅니다. 제가 “방에다가 야간 조명을 하나 켜 놓고 자면 어떨까?”라고 물었더니, 아들이 이렇게 대답합니다. “알았어요 아빠. 그런데 여기에 잠시 같이 있어주시면 안되요?” “알았다 아들아”라고 대답하며 같이 있어주곤 했습니다. 빛과 아빠는 어둠의 세력을 물리치는데 매우 유용한 조합이지요. 당연한 논리입니다. 빛이 있으니 어둠이 사라지고, 아빠가 있으니 아이의 두려움은 차차 진정되고, 아이는 곧 다시 잠이 들곤 했습니다.
Darkness has been no stranger throughout all of history. It was a reality in Jesus’ own time. Mary and Joseph are turned away from a lighted inn to take refuge in a dark stable…Jesus is born in pitch darkness…Herod has all the babies in Bethlehem killed in an effort to eliminate the One who is predicted to be King. Darkness and death were no stranger to Jesus.
어둠은 인류의 역사에서 늘 존재해 왔습니다. 예수님의 시대에도 어둠은 삶의 현실이었습니다. 마리아와 요셉은 불을 환히 밝힌 여관에서 거절당하고, 컴컴한 마굿간에서 몸을 뉘었습니다. 예수님도 칠흑 같은 어둠 속에서 태어나셨죠. 헤롯은 왕이 될 것이라는 예언과 함께 태어난 아이를 없애기 위해 베들레헴에서 태어난 모든 사내 아이들을 죽이라고 했습니다. 예수님 또한 태어날 때부터 어둠과 죽음을 경험해야 했지요.
And yet, into this darkness a silent star beams, and in the midst of the killing a baby survives. This is the heart of the Gospel message: “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Christ shines in our lives like a beacon of light, and as potent as the darkness is in our world, Christ’s light cannot be extinguished. It shall not be extinguished!
그러나 이 캄캄한 어둠 가운데 고요한 별빛이 비췹니다. 많은 사내 아이들이 죽임을 당하는 가운데 한 아이가 살아납니다. “그 빛이 어둠 속에서 비치니, 어둠이 그 빛을 이기지 못하였다"는 복음의 메세지의 핵심이 바로 여기 있습니다. 그리스도는 우리 삶 가운데 등불이 되시고, 어둠으로 가득찬 우리 세상에 꺼지지 않는 빛이 되십니다. 그리고 그 빛은 꺼지지 않아야만 합니다.
Whether you are hearing this at the close of the year, or the beginning of the New Year: We as Christians must bear witness to this light. We as Christians must reflect this light into a dark world. We as Christians must shine with this light to lead the way out of darkness…out of Covid and its variants…out of racism…out of our climate destruction. We must reflect the light of Christ in our dark world of hurt!
여러분이 오늘 이 말씀을 연말에 접하게 되든지 새해에 접하게 되든지 간에 우리 모두가 기억해야 할 것은 우리 크리스천들은 이 빛을 증거하는 사람들이란 점입니다. 그리고 우리가 이 빛을 어두운 세상에 비춰야 합니다. 우리 크리스천들은 이 빛과 함께 빛을 발하여 어둠 가운데서 생명의 길을 내야 합니다. 코비드와 다양한 변종들, 인종차별과 기후 파괴라는 현실의 어둠 가운데 예수의 길을 밝히는 환한 빛이 되어야 합니다. 상처로 가득찬 어두운 세상에 그리스도의 빛을 비춰야 합니다.

Let me close with this old story: There was a successful businessman who had no children, but 3 nephews. He was getting old and knew he had to appoint his successor. He called the 3 nephews to him to explain the situation and set up a test for them. He gave them each the same amount of money and sent them off to secure that which would fill a room of the same size to the maximum. The nephew who filled the room the most would inherit his business. At the appointed time, the first nephew returned with bayes of hay, and although there was a lot, it only filled the room half full. The next nephew purchased down feathers, and when released in the room filled much of it, but when they had settled down, only filled 2/3th of the empty room. The 3rd nephew did not return on time. The two other nephews said it’s too late and one of them must be declared the winner. But the Uncle said: “let’s give him a little bit more time. Sure enough, as the day gave way to the darkness, the 3rd nephew arrived, but with seemingly nothing with him. He explained to his Uncle that he spent most of the day in a small church, praying for some insight. He gave most of the money to the poor through a collection offering. With the few coins he had left, he purchased a small candle and a match. He placed the candle in the middle of the room and when he lit it, the light filled every corner of the dark room. The Uncle knew instantly that he possessed the wisdom to be his successor!
오늘의 말씀을 우리가 잘 아는 이야기로 마치려고 합니다. 아들은 없고 조카만 세명이 있는 성공적인 사업가가 있었습니다. 그가 나이가 들어 후계자를 지명해야 될 때가 왔지요. 조카 세명을 불러 상황을 설명하고 그들에게 숙제를 주었습니다. 그들에게 똑같은 돈을 주고, 가서 방을 채울 수 있는 물건을 구해오라고 했지요. 같은 돈으로 방을 더 많이 채운 조카가 그의 사업을 물려받기로 했습니다. 약속된 시간에 첫째 조카가 지푸라기를 잔뜩 사 들고 돌아옵니다. 꽤 많은 양이었지만 방을 반 밖에 채우지 못했습니다. 그 다음 조카는 오리털을 잔뜩 사 가지고 돌아왔습니다. 꽤 많은 양의 오리털을 방에 풀어 놓으니 그 방을 거의 다 채운 것 같았지만, 이내 숨이 죽고 방의 3 분의 2 밖에 채우지 못했습니다. 셋째 조카는 시간에 맞춰 돌아오지 않았습니다. 다른 두 조카들은 이미 약속한 시간이 지났으니 더 기다리지 말고 이제 기업을 물려받을 사람을 정해야 한다 했지요. 그러자 삼촌은 말합니다. “시간을 좀 더 줘 보자.” 날이 어두워 지자 셋째 조카가 도착합니다. 그는 빈손으로 돌아온 듯 했습니다. 그 셋째 조카가 삼촌에게 자신은 그 날 하루의 대부분을 작은 교회에 가서 지혜를 구하는 기도를 했다고 말합니다. 그리고는 헌금시간에 가진 돈의 대부분을 어려운 이웃을 위한 헌금으로 드렸다고 했습니다. 그리고 나서 남은 푼돈으로 작은 초 하나와 성냥을 샀습니다. 그리고 그 초를 어둑해진 방 가운데 놓고 불을 켜니, 그 빛이 어두운 방을 가득 채웠습니다. 삼촌은 바로 알아봤지요. 이 조카가 그의 후계자가 될 지혜를 가지고 있음을!
